anyway, question for Mr Icarus:

you stated that you can achieve 8 million by the end of stage 3 which i would assume is achieved by a limited amount of catspider milking, i wonder how long you do it for and do you have any handy tips? i'm fairly comfortable with doing this now but if i try to go for more than 3 or 4 rounds problems occur, i either die or leave myself with little energy which gives a great risk of death before the 4th stage worm health recovery. what i need here is a safe method of scoring some points from the boss. with kosame it does seem to be possible to stall some bullets from the nasty spread and then quickly sweep across the screen to avoid most of the bullets, i'm not sure if this really works yet but i don't fancy doing it the way yusemi does as it's too dangerous by the third time the nasty spread appears.

How quick are your reactions? ^_-

There is no easy way about milking the third boss, and I very rarely do it for a prolonged amount of time. Most of the time I start the battle with 5mil on the board, and without milking finish with about 6.5mil. If I go with the milking, I go for about four rounds at maximum, as any more and it starts to get uncomfortable.

If you haven't noticed already, the fast dartspread is partially aimed. That means that there is a way of leading it around the screen for safety - if you place your Shikigami on the catspider's head and start quite high up the side of the screen, you can stall a couple of patterns, then release the Shikigami and quickly move to the corner, stall again, then move to the bottom middle of the screen. Keep repeating this pattern if you can.

Also, you can use the chain that connects your Shikigami as a quick guideline for  positioning your character, which is very handy if you aren't going the bullet-stalling way, as you can keep an eye on the dartspreads and their direction of movement, and can use the chain to instantly determine your character's current position and can adjust accordingly.

As for the pods themselves: they always have two attacks. The first attack is an aimed cluster of bullets that should be easy to dodge in the early stages. The second attack is when the yellow pod trail explodes, either by you destroying a pod, or by the pod self-destructing. When the trail explodes, two sets of knives are released in a lateral direction from the movement of the trail - if the trail was travelling straight downwards for example, the knives will be travelling straight left and right.

The most difficult thing about dodging the knife trail is that the pods don't always move in straight lines but rather bounce all over the screen, causing the knives to go all over the place. You can however make it slightly easier on yourself by attacking only one pod at a time using short bursts of fire - they seem to take less damage the closer they are to you - and also if you move so that you are in-line with the pod trail, when the knives are released they should miss you.

The best way I guess to stay alive is to just keep moving. If you are aiming to milk for a minimal amount of time, during the yellow pods phase, just hold down autofire and aim for the pods - this will slow the screen down giving you an extra second of reaction time, and will also shorten the milking phase to three cycles through sustained damage to the boss.

Here's a pattern practice replay as an example of how I usually go about milking when I decide to do it. ^_^
http://bigcore.rsdio.com/icarus/catspider.avi

(This isn't a scoring replay BTW, and I do take a single hit during the practice, but it does give you an example of how quickly you have to move and position yourself during the milking run.)

Right now I'm skipping over milking the third boss unless I am properly equipped to do it, and going for the big chain in stage5 and 6 which should be worth a lot more in points. I'm expecting at least one big ALL score from the Cave specialists, which means that a likely top-place score will have to be a new forum record.

By the way, since there's rules in place disallowing the sharing of complete soundtracks at shmupsforum, I'll pop this up here. Its a doujin release of a Garegga remixes soundtrack called "Battle Garegga Anthology". Just picked up the disc today in the mail, think you guys might like it. ^_-

Well gentlemen, it's the end of the tournament. I think we can congratulate ourselves for putting in a great shift and taking the team title, and also for doing extremely well in the individuals. It has been a pleasure working with and playing against everyone.

The main question is the future of namakoteam. Everyone is free to use this forum for their own needs - I'll set up a general chat forum and a Records forum for keeping personal records. It'd be nice to see more UK players here as part of a growing namakoteam too - fancy recruiting some of your London peeps, DEL? ^_- I think a dedicated UK-based gaming team would be great to compete with the likes of Arcade Extreme, the French-based D-KU and the small but fairly decent (at Cave stuff anyway) Cowboys.

And of course, if STGT '07 is ever in the pipeline, I'd like to work with you guys again to maintain our title as shmupsforum champions. ^_^

Icarus - I've got to commend you upon maturing into a true force on shoot'em ups :!:   Congratulations on the win!

My jetsetting really got in the way on the weeks after Batrider, so that combined with a dislike of the last 4 titles was a bit of a killer-combo for me.
But as I predicted at the end of week 1; that mulletgeezer would "come through" - and he did :!:
Smraedis and Freddie were no less dangerous than mulletgeezer though!
elbarto beat Rando - 'What more could you ask?!'

Icarus - On the subject of next year, I should be able to get Mills to compete with us/join the team.
-------------------------------------------

elbarto - Do you know how I can get hold of a copy of that Mushihimesama Insanity Replay DVD??  I wish to return to Mush now.

Thank you. ^_^

It's been a pleasure playing alongside and against everyone in the team. It's a shame that you didn't have enough time to play from Week 3 onwards, as I would have liked to compete against you at full strength, but it's understandable if you have other commitments. Until next time. ^_^

The Mushi DVD set can be bought from these two places: VGMWorld and Play-Asia. They aren't cheap, however (about £45 before shipping) and you might get hit with customs (as I did) but its a good set to have anyway.

Thanks Icarus, yeah I almost went through with the Play Asia order this afternoon, but the rigmaroll between not accepting my switchcard and switching to Paypal payment put me off.
I could get ravengames to get it for me and collect it at the shop, depending on their price.

Cheers

Oh and you've probably guessed.....I only like to go head to head on games that I like

Until next time...

Thanks to all the nice things Cheesy I have been happy to be part of the winning team, and I hope to stick with you guys as a good team too.

Now I can finally go back to the games I enjoy playing (though I kinda have in the last few weeks, its my stress relief ^_~ )

I've hardly used Play-Asia since they decided to stop marking parcels down and I got hit with a nice unexpected customs fee. I've got all my Insanity DVDs/CDs from VGMworld/Cocoebiz, and Kahori has always made sure the parcels have been marked down when I've asked her.

Hopefully I'll be allowed to stay on the team

Of course. ^_^

Everyone is welcome to use the forum, I've added a couple more sections for now. I've enjoyed chatting with everyone, and hopefully we can stick together and defend our title come the next STGT. ^_-

Also, I think that some shmupsforum members have a tournament or two in the works. If anyone decides to join in with them, let me know and I'll set up a private access area for you to discuss strategies in secret. Us UK peeps gotta stick together and dominate all challengers, heheh. ^_-

LUNardei is saving me the hassle and expense of ordering from HK.  He's mailing me a copy of the Mush Insanity Replay DVD Cheesy

elbarto - The Old Mills is working round the corner from me at the moment, so I'll pass on the Raiden Fighters Insanity DVD to him this week.  Many Thanks again :!:

Let me know if you guys want replays of particular games. My replay archives is quite vast and spans nearly 50 DVD-Rs and a whole bunch of official releases over the past 10+ years, so if there's a replay of a game you require, I probably have it. ^_-

I just checked the overall Tournament Results.
Gee Wiz  , 28th place and 38th place on Star Force and Guwange.  Its a wonder how I managed to hang in the top 10  .
(Noteably the two weeks that I was away).

Just for the record, I didn't vote Guwange, I voted Esprade.  In the scheme of Namakoteam dominance on a technical Cave game, Guwange was perhaps the best 'Team' choice, but I kinda knew that my complete inexperience and complete lack of time to spend on it, would be the nail in the coffin individually.
.
.
Not that it matters--> The Team Result was Great :!:

^Thanks for the replay offers Icarus!

By the way, I remember reading recently that you've only been into shooters for a relatively short time.....

I figure the former is true, due to your age...?

Just Curious.

I've been playing for 19 years (since I was six, I'm 25 now), and been playing shootemups for about 11 years. The replay collection started when an old friend of mine passed me an R-Type replay on VHS.

Most of my archives is on CD and DVD as various collections of MPEGs, AVIs and so on, while a selection is stuff on VHS from way back when. ^_-

Oh right!  I must have misread the thing about getting into shooters more recently than that  .
I probably confused you with a LUNardei post.

If no one has any objections I will lock this STGT '06 forum now. You will still be able to access the subforum and view all threads, but no more posts can be made.

Just a little cleaning. ^_-
